What do you need?
Good preparation makes installation much easier. Before you start, make sure you have the stair treads, a tape measure or measuring tape, and possibly a pencil or removable marker on hand.
It is also important that the stair treads are thoroughly clean.
Dirt, dust, and grease can affect the adhesion of the self-adhesive layer.
Step 1: Thoroughly clean the stair treads
Don't start sticking immediately.
First, carefully clean each tread and remove dust, dirt, and any grease residue. Then, let the stairs dry completely.
Especially the area where the self-adhesive stair mat will be attached must be clean and dry.
Step 2: Determine the center of the stair tread
A common mistake is placing the first stair mat by eye and then trying to align all other mats with it.
The result can be that the stair mats keep shifting slightly.
Therefore, first measure the width of the stair tread and determine its center. Do the same with the stair mat.
This way, you can align both centers.
Step 3: First, place the stair mat loosely
Do not yet remove the protective layer from the adhesive side.
Place the first half-moon stair mat loosely on the tread and check from different angles if the position is correct.
Especially check the distance to the front and both sides of the tread.
Are you satisfied? Then note or remember the dimensions used, so you can repeat them for the following treads.
Step 4: Use the same distance on each tread
A neat result is mainly achieved through consistency.
For example, if the first stair mat is placed exactly in the middle and at a certain distance from the front of the tread, you use the same measurements for all subsequent treads.
It's better to measure each tread separately than to assume that all treads are exactly the same.
Step 5: Attach the self-adhesive stair mat
Once you are sure that the position is correct, you can remove the protective film from the self-adhesive backing.
Then carefully place the stair mat in the predetermined position.
Press it down evenly according to the product instructions. Avoid shifting the mat too much during attachment, as this could cause it to lie crooked.
Step 6: Recheck each tread
Preferably work tread by tread.
So, don't place all mats loosely first and then quickly stick everything down.
After each attached stair mat, you can check from the bottom of the stairs whether everything is still neatly aligned.
A deviation of a few millimeters is hardly noticeable on one tread, but can become increasingly apparent over an entire staircase.
Step 7: Check the attachment
Once all stair treads are in place, check each mat individually.
Pay particular attention to the edges and check that the mat fits snugly everywhere on the stair tread.
Always follow the instructions that come with the specific stair treads before use.
How many stair treads do you need?
Before ordering a set, it is advisable to simply count the number of treads you want to cover.
The TEKZEN stair mat sets contain 15 half-moon mats. If you have fifteen treads or fewer that you want to equip with stair mats, one set may be sufficient.
Do you have more treads? Then calculate in advance how many sets you need.
Don't forget any irregular treads or an intermediate landing.
Which color stair mat suits your stairs?
In addition to placement, color plays an important role in the final result.
On light or white stairs, dark stair treads create clear contrast. On wooden stairs, grey or other neutral tones can beautifully complement the natural look of the wood.
